Popular Old Pickups
Vintage Trucks are generally considered vehicles that are 25 years or older and made for light commercial duty. They generally have a capacity of no more than two tons. Vintage trucks include panel trucks, pickups, vans, station wagons and delivery sedans.
Nissan was prominent in the list of vintage trucks manufacturers, and stayed at its forefront for more than ten years.
In 1959 the truck and car market in the United States was about gas guzzlers. Everybody wanted a V-8. Power was ever so much more important than fuel economy back then. Gas was cheap and vehicular travel and transport was a comfortable, powerful, convenient and inexpensive option. Datsun, the precursor to the Nissan came onto the scene at that time, though of course the vehicles weren’t vintage trucks as yet. The manufacturer introduced its 1000 cc mini truck. It has a 37 horsepower engine and the load capacity was a mere one quarter ton.
It took awhile to become widely accepted but eventually it competed well with the Fords and Chevys of the truck world. Sporty and so much easier to drive than its bigger brothers, the Datsun became popular. Modifications were introduced that helped it grow into popularity and finally to become on of the more popular of the vintage trucks today. Datsun gave it a 1200 cc engine and brought its horsepower up to 60.
In 1961 Datsun introduced its 320 model, and then in 1965 its later to be vintage 520 trucks. At that time the Datsun pickup grew from its standard sales of 200 or 300 annually to over 15,000. These Datsun trucks soon became the best selling import truck in the United States.
Thanks to its pre-eminence and its prominence in the U.S. pickup world, Datsun and Nissan trucks represent a large part of the vintage trucks market in the U.S.
